Conservation of Furnishing Textiles

Edited by A. French

Post-prints of the SSCR conference held in
Glasgow, 30 & 31 March, 1990. Most of the eleven papers presented are case studies, two of which identify problems with earlier conservation practices now rectified by thorough analytical procedures coupled with refined techniques. Each case study describes the approach taken towards the conservation treatment of an object, together with a detailed description of technique and a specification of materials used. Examples of textiles treated vary from a 19th century beaded chair to a textile-covered bed cornice. All the authors agree on the importance of environmental control which contributes to the safe display of textiles in their original surroundings, as at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. Each paper in this excellent publication is complemented by photographs and/or drawings.
